The Ocean Cleanup
Removing plastic from rivers and oceans
Ocean Cleanup uuses the natural forces of the ocean to passively concentrate and capture plastic. Whereby, cleanup time could be reduced from millennia to just a few years, using houseboats named Interceptors.
The ship, which is 100% powered by solar panels on its roof, manages to draw riverine waste on board by means of a barrier deployed several dozen metres upstream. The waste is then transported to the barge's conveyor belt by the force of the current. The conveyor belt extracts the debris from the water and distributes it in floating shuttles. Then, a tugboat loads the shuttle and takes it to a sorting center where the waste is recycled.
8 interceptors are deployed in 5 countries including Indonesia, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Thailand and Vietnam and a System 2 in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
