Houses built from seaweed
Omar Sánchez Vázquez, Mexican inventor, decided to find solutions to valorize these algae. Owner of a greenhouse, Blue Green Mexico, he built the Casa Angelita (named after his mother), the first house made entirely from Sargassum seaweed. Indeed, the 2,000 reddish-brown bricks that make it up are produced 100% from 20 metric tons of Sargassum. The invention uses the same technique traditionally used to make adobe bricks in Mexico. Yet this organic, thermal and functional building material costs 50% less. Sargablock bricks are made of 70% dehydrated macroalgae, do not smell bad, their hardness is resistant to hurricanes and their durability is 120 years.
Omar Sánchez Vázquez's construction team is currently working on two construction projects:
- 10 residential houses will be donated to poor families in his region,
- a project in Tulum, where the organization is building 40 residential houses and has an eco-hotel project.
