Lithion Recycling
Reducing the environmental impact of lithium-ion batteries
The lithium extraction process has a significant impact on the environment. Producing one ton of lithium requires the use of 500,000 gallons of water in these desert regions, where this resource is often scarce. Yet this resource is essential to achieve better electrification of transport. Lithion Recycling has developed a process by which 95% of the components of old lithium-ion batteries can be recycled into a new battery.
The company transforms used batteries into a black powder that contains all the strategic materials. The collected metal and plastic shavings are recycled through standard channels.
In 2023, the company will open the first commercial recycling plant for lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars. The plant will recycle about 7,500 metric tons of batteries annually, the equivalent of about 20,000 electric or hybrid vehicles.
